Deichman Romsås Public Library

2021
In collaboration with Wendimagegn Belete
Oslo, Norway

This vibrant mural, a collaboration between Kebreab Demeke and Wendimagegn Belete, transforms the library wall into a living tapestry of knowledge, and storytelling. Inspired by East African visual traditions, it blends symbols, imagery, and figures that reflect the multicultural essence of the visitors—young and old, from diverse backgrounds and histories. At its heart, the mural intertwines simplified Ethiopian traditional visuals with global references, using bold colors and intricate patterns. Ceremonial elements, such as the ornate horse saddle, symbolize heritage and movement—knowledge passed through generations. For example, A lizard, drawn from Indigenous storytelling, represents resilience and rebirth, mirroring the regenerative power of learning. The mural embraces multiple languages, weaving scripts and symbols into an inclusive narrative. It invites the community to see their own stories reflected, making the library not just a place of books but of shared histories and evolving cultures.
