Summer project in Hvervenbukta Pavilion

2021

Organized by Vibeke Frost Andersen

Hvervenbukta, Norway

In July 2021, Vibeke Frost Andersen invited artists to the pavilion in Hvervenbukta, Oslo, Norway, opening it as a temporary hub for artistic projects and dialogue. Each of the three participating artists or groups had a week to engage with the site, exploring practices connected to public spaces. During a one-week stay in the pavilion, kebreab showcased a collection of materials and historical archives from his research project “Marxist-Modern”. The project is about the 1960s Ethiopian Student Movement.

As part of the initiative also, each artist was given a blank sail to create a message for the diverse community of Holmlia, activating the fjord as a space for public engagement. kebreab painted iconic revolutionary imagery on the sail from the Ethiopian revolution, connecting it to broader global movements. The visuals, rooted in history yet universally resonant, served as a bridge between different revolutionary experiences, inviting the community to reflect on the enduring nature of struggle and change.

Personal sketchbooks, scholarly reference books, interview notes from student leaders and activists, and video footage documenting Ethiopian students' experiences in the U.S. duringthelate1950s were part of the presentation which sparked reflection and dialogue during his stay in the pavilion.
